Lomachenko’s Manager: Gervonta Is The ‘Best Opponent’ For Loma, A ‘More Skilled’ And ‘More Entertaining’ Fight Than Stevenson

Vasily Lomachenko’s manager, Egis Klimas, says Loma is the best fight for Gervonta Davis in the lightweight division now “if” he comes back. He says a match between Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) and Tank Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) would be “more interesting for the fans” than the other guys at 135. He’s been chasing a fight against Tank since 2018 with no luck.

The ‘True King’

Lomachenko can cement his legacy if he returns this year and defeats Tank Davis. That would be the perfect fight for Loma to take before retirement, as it would put the cap on his career.

The Real Record

Most agree that he should still be unbeaten because his losses to Orlando Salido, Teofimo Lopez, and Devin Haney were all highly questionable. In reality, Lomachenko is 21-0 now, and the true King of the lightweight division.

Klimas says he sees WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson as a fighter that shells up, and “runs away.” Financially and in terms of entertainment-wise, it’s not as appealing for the former three-division world champion Lomachenko to fight him. It would be boring for the fans to watch Shakur run around the ring, trying to win a points decision.

Lomachenko hasn’t fought since May 12th last year, when he knocked out former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. in the eleventh round to win the vacant IBF 135-lb title in Perth, Australia. After that fight, Loma had the chance to fight Tank last year, but didn’t do it.

“Everybody thinks Loma is done and is out of it. Everybody wants to fight Loma. I think it’s good because if Loma comes back, that would be a very good fight to make with [Gervonta] Davis,” said manager Egis Klimas to YSM Sports Media about Vasily Lomachenko being viewed as washed up now that he’s getting older and has been inactive.

Lomachenko looked better than ever in his last fight against Kambosos. That was a well-rested Loma fighting a true lightweight instead of a boiled down welterweight, which is what Devin Haney looked like in his fight against him in 2023. As good as Loma looked in that fight, he would have beaten Tank Davis if they fought.

The Best Fight

“What is a Shakur and what is a Tank?” said Klimas when asked which is the better fight for Lomachenko between Shakur Stevenson and Tank Davis. “Skill and financial,” said Egis, viewing Gervonta as more skilled and a better money fight for Lomachenko.

“He’s [Tank] a much better fighter in my way and an upcoming fighter. I’m not going to take anything away from Shakur. He’s a good fighter, but he’s a bumper. He goes into a shell and runs away. Tank comes to fight. It’s a more interesting fight. It’s a more intriguing fight.

“That’s what makes it more interesting. That’s what makes it more interesting to fans,” said Klimas when told that Tank Davis is a more “dangerous” fight for Lomachenko. “Right now, Lomachenko is the best opponent to fight Tank.”
