Boxing Results: Tim Tszyu Breaks Losing Streak With Fourth-Round TKO Of Joey Spencer: Sets Stage For Potential Thurman Clash

Former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs) snapped his two-fight losing streak with a fourth-round technical knockout of Joey Spencer (19-2, 11 KOs) on Saturday night in their headliner at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Australia.

The fight was competitive through the third round, with Spencer, 24, landing nice shots and handling Tszyu’s hard punches without much trouble. However, things went downhill rapidly for Spencer in the fourth when he was hurt by a heavy right hand from Tszyu.

Tszyu’s Flurry

Once Tim realized Spencer was hurt, he unleashed a 20-punch flurry of punches, throwing them at rapid-fire velocity. Spencer then turned his back and walked away. Tim added a final punch for good measure as Spencer walked away, which was a cheap shot, but oh well. There was bad blood between them, and they may have been his way of getting a little extra in. The official time of the stoppage was 2:18.

Tszyu was ahead by the scores 29-28, 29-28, and 29-28.

It was a good victory for Tszyu, but this wasn’t a top-tier fighter that he was facing. Spencer was chosen as a confidence booster for Tim because he’d lost his last two fights and needed a pick-me-up to get back on the winning track to set up a money fight against Keith Thurman in Australia.

Boxing fans could get excited about what Tszyu did tonight if he’d been matched against Vergil Ortiz Jr, Serhii Bohachuk, Israil Madrimov, Bakhram Murtazaliev, or Charles Conwell. In other words, highly rated 154-lb fighters would have all been favored to defeat Tszyu. Joey Spencer was NOT highly rated. He wasn’t ranked at all in the top 15 by any of the four sanctioning bodies. That’s for a reason.

Tszyu got his win tonight and can now face the former unified welterweight champion Thurman, 36, in a money fight in the summer if he makes it through training camp without suffering another fight cancellation like we saw last year.
